Presentations given by SWEREA and SAAB

Presentations given by SWEREA, a Swedish Research Institute Group and by SAAB aerospace company, a leading European Aerospace Company based in Sweden, in Room 1B10 on Monday,23 Rabi' I at 12:30 PM for one and half hour. Many interest audience attend the seminar and participate on discussion. That is one of the the center seminar series.

Part I:  Research at Swerea (Arne Melander, Prof,  Swerea KIMAB and KTH)

(12:30-1:15pm)
The presentation will give a review of current research areas in materials technology at the Swerea. It will cover areas of materials and process development for steel and aluminum, polymer composites and cast metal components. Manufacturing techniques for components like metal forming, machining, joining will be highlighted. Finally, a review will be made of application of such materials in industry with respect to design methods, strength in different environments and corrosion.

Part II: Saab use of advanced materials and manufacturing methods in aircraft design (Pontus Nordin, Techn Fellow, Saab Aerosystems)

(1:15-2:00pm)

A short review of composites, metals, and related manufacturing processes used by Saab for commercial and military airframe structures. The need for improved materials and processes will also be addressed.

Arrival of the Researcher Dr. Ghassan Al-Chaar

The Center of Excellence for Research in Engineering Materials is pleased to announce the arrival of Dr. Ghassan Al-Chaar to Riyadh from the Construction Engineering Research Laboratories in Illinois, USA.  Dr. Al-Chaar arrived on 18 Muharram 1429 to work in the Center of Excellence for Research in Engineering Materials, College of Engineering.

Dr. Al-Chaar worked in research related to infrastructures’ resistance to earthquakes, and he has many studies on the used of fiber reinforced polymers to rehabilitated buildings.  Lately, he is focusing on research topics that utilize the nanotechnologies to enhance the properties of polymer and cementation materials to explore new properties that would result form their composition with nanoparticles.  Also, he is interested in comparing codes, construction materials, and method of construction between the Middle-East and the United States of America.

On-Going Contract Negotiations with New International Expertise

The Center of Excellence for Research in Engineering Materials is currently negotiating with two international experts, namely Professor Subodh Mhaisalkar the director of Material Technology Sector, Research Center of Materials and Professor Thiru Sritharan, Associate Dean, College of Engineering, National Technical University, in Singapore, to collaborate with the Center of Excellence for Research in Engineering Materials.

The Second Workshop of the Center of Excellence for Research in Engineering Materials

The Center of Excellence for Research in Engineering Materials carried out a get-acquainted workshop to display and discuss the work and activities of the center during the first year of its foundation.  The workshop activities were completed Sunday 11/1/1429 H (20/1/2008 G), In Engineering Collage campus, Theater 1B-10.  The agenda of the workshop included display the plan and selected activities of the Center of Excellence.  Also, researchers from the university and visitors from the local industry engaged in discussion and presented and initiated new ideas related to the work of the center and its research activates.
