KSU Researchers Showcase Sustainable Protective Textile for Defense Applications

Researchers from the Center of Excellence for Research in Engineering Materials (CEREM) at King Saud University successfully presented their pioneering study, “Protective Cloths for Defense Applications,” at the World Defense Show 2026, held from February 8 to 12 at the Riyadh International Exhibition and Convention Center.
The study introduces an innovative protective textile featuring a double-layer nanofibrous architecture fabricated from sustainable biopolymers. The hydrophobic polylactic acid (PLA) layer, embedded with silica nanoparticles, provides waterproofing, infrared reflectivity, and thermal insulation, while the silver nanoparticle layer offers antibacterial protection and effective moisture management. The textile’s breathable, porous structure enhances wearer comfort during strenuous operational conditions.
This lightweight and environmentally sustainable textile demonstrates significant potential for integration into military uniforms, tactical apparel, armor systems, and advanced protective field equipment, thereby advancing innovation in high-performance and sustainable defense technologies.
